Sapzurro is located in an idyllic bay surrounded by forested hills. The path to Capurganá is the best option to observe fauna, particularly in the sector between Sapzurro and “El mirador”. It is possible to see four species of trogons and three species of toucans along the trail and several species of hummingbirds such as the Klais guimeti. Around Sapzurro it is relatively easy to see or hear the Howler Monkey (Alouatta palliata) or to find a group of curious Titis monkeys (Saguinus geoffroyi) on the way to La Miel. With luck, walking through the forest you can find a herd of Coatis or Cusumbos (Nasua narica) or have an encounter with a Mountain Dog (Eira barbara).
The migration of birds in Sapzurro is spectacular and between September and October, thousands of swallows and tyranids can be observed moving south, early in the morning or in the evening. Around the same time, hundreds of migratory warblers, fly traps and tanagers can be seen from the stairs leading to the border. In mid-October and late November, the border post on the way to “La Miel” is an excellent place to observe migratory raptors.
How to get there: Sapzurro is a 15-minute boat ride from Capurganá and boats leave the pier when there are enough passengers to make a trip. It is suggested not to travel between January and April since in this period there is usually a “mareta” and the boat trip can be hard, however, if it is necessary to travel, check beforehand about the state of the sea. For those who like hiking, walking from Sapzurro to Capurganá takes a little over an hour. |
Where to stay: There are fewer accommodations in Sapzurro than in Capurganá. To stay in the forest, the two cabins in the Tacarcuna Natural Reserve are an excellent option (tacarcunas@gmail.com). For those who prefer to camp or sleep in a hammock, El Chileno or Posadas El Camping are our recommended ones. You can consult more information about the different options at www.sapzurrocaribe.com. |
Local guides: For guides you can contact Martha or Fabio (tacarcunas@gmail.com, 314 6223149) who can recommend local guides. |
Walking trails: The road between Capurganá and Sapzurro is excellent for wildlife observation. In Sapzurro, the Tacarcuna Natural Reserve has a trail with many species of native palms and spaces to observe birds, butterflies, and other pollinators. |
