San Francisco and Triganá are two quiet towns on the shores of the Gulf of Darien, in the shadow of the Serranía de Tripogadí. The Serranía and the Río Ciego still conserve important fragments of forest, where many species that inhabit the forest can be observed. The jungles of the Serranía, especially those that preserve giant Ceibas, are one of the few places in the region where the Ara ambiguus Macaw can still be found. The path that follows the Rio Ciego is excellent for observing wildlife, including birds such as Capito maculicoronatus and Manacus vitellinus, as well as three species of monkeys, the White-faced Monkey, the Tití and the Howler Monkey. Going up the same river it is possible to find the impressive Darien Harlequin frog, among other colorful frogs and numerous Salta streams (lizard). It is fun to go out at night to observe the glass frogs, always accompanied by local guides.
How to get: San Francisco is 1 hr 45 min from Turbo by boat. In the Waffe, port of Turbo, direct boats leave for San Francisco and Triganá from Monday to Saturday, between 10 and 11:30 am. It is important to note that the return boats to Turbo leave early in the morning and the boat heading to Capurganá can stop and pick up passengers heading north. It is also possible to coordinate private transportation from Necoclí through Ecohuellas (ecohuellas.sas@gmail.com). It is suggested not to travel between January and April since in this period there is usually a “mareta” and the boat trip can be hard, however, if it is necessary to travel, check beforehand about the state of the sea. |

In San Francisco, the Cabañas del Viento (Cesar Vélez 3216403156) or the Hotel Caracolí (Cel. 314 6306185) are good options to stay in front of the sea. If you want to wake up to the sound of the jungle, the community-run Posadas del Río is the best option (Jeudith 313 6035619). It is also possible to contact Ecohuellas for this service. |
Local guides: In San Francisco the guide association can be contacted via email (asociacionguiasgolfodarien@gmail.com) or by phone (Cel. 311 4103220 or 320 3296401). |
Trails: The hydro-path that takes a tour of the Ciego River (San Francisco) is excellent for wildlife observation. A visit to the intake is mandatory for those who want to know the Darien Harlequin. The path to the forest of the giants is worth it to see ancient and immense trees, and to enjoy the forest in all its splendor. |
